Since Mo Yan’s winning of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012,the translator of Mo Yan’s novel, Howard Goldblatt is becoming the focus of study of Chinese literary translation. Howard Goldblatt has translated more than 50 works of Chinese literature in his nearly 30 years of translation practice, and many of them are awarded international rewards. It is proved that he is the most accomplished translator of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. Andre Lefevere as a representative of the School of Translation Studies, proposed rewriting theory which also named manipulation theory in 1990. He holds that translation is rewriting and manipulation, and it is constrained by manipulative factors like ideology, poetics and patronage. This thesis investigates the manipulation of these constraints to Howard Goldblatt, analyzing English versions of Wolf Totem and Life and Death are Wearing Me Out, trying to study and summarize characteristics of his translation, wishing to shed lights on further study of Chinese literary translation and help to promote the spreading of Chinese literature in overseas. |
