| Traditional translation theories consider translation as a conversion between different language symbols and the translator have been called “matchmaker”. However, the translator’s self-awareness has been awaked and the subjectivity of the translator gets more and more attention in translation studies under the influence of cultural turn. As one of the masterpieces of in ancient prose written by Tao Yuanming, Tao Hua Yuan Ji has been translated by numerous translators both abroad and home.In this thesis, the author selects five English translations of Tao Hua Yuan Ji, which are translated by James, Davis, Lin Yutang, Luo Jingguo and Wang Rongpei respectively and mainly discusses the translator’ subjectivity in English translation of Tao Hua Yuan Ji from two levels, first at linguistic level and second at aesthetic level. By comparison and analysis of the five English versions, the author also explains some cultural factors which influence the translator’s subjectivity in translation process. Generally speaking, the author intends to provide a new model of analyzing translation study of ancient Chinese literary works.Based on the case study of Tao Hua Yuan Ji, the author lists several influencing factors on translator’s subjectivity. To be specific, thorough comprehension of the translator’s subjectivity and its influencing factors helps the translator balance those factors during translation. In the end of the thesis, the author states limitations of the research and suggestions for further research. |
