In the Early Qing dynasty, there was a strong academic atmosphere which advocated reverting to old ways. Being quiet for a long time, the seal characters caught the public attention. Scholars of Qing dynasty not only fully recognized the historical value of epigraphy, but also began to gather,record, visit the monument and do a lot of research on it.Qian Yong praised inscriptions on ancient bronze objects highly in his calligraphy, which can trace back to his love to the epigraphy. The core of Qian Yong’s calligraphy rooted in the study of epigraphy. The early criticisms of epigraphy and the records on the monument played a very important role in the formation of his calligraphy. So, study on Qian Yong’s activities and achievements on epigraphy helps a lot on the research of Qian Yong’s calligraphy and the history of epigraphy. It is meaningful for us to do this job.Qian Yong studied the epigraphy his lifelong. He explored the origin and different schools of calligraphy, epigraphy and other issues related to ancient worship based on his profound knowledge of the tablet and his realistic spirit. The epigraphy lied in Qian Yong’s calligraphy. Qian Yong was good at integration monument and vigorously promoted the Tablet, which contributed a lot to the development of the Tablet.This thesis studies the famous theorist Qian Yong of Qing dynasty to explore the essence and the deep origin of his calligraphy. Through the historical background, environment, and personal preferences, this thesis will analyze the reasons of Qian Yong’s calligraphy. The thesis will focus on the epigraphy’s impact on Qian Yong and his arguments. Qian Yong’s argument inspired people and had great impact on the history of Chinese calligraphy.Qian Yong spoke for Ruan Yuan’s book of Schools of North and South and The Tablet of the North and South, which havd a significant impact on his construction of theory system of calligraphy.Qian Yong developed the theories of Ruan Yuan’s monument in the North and South and made a considerable contribution to the development of the tablet.The thesis based on the historical data, comprehensive, integrated and systematic research on Qian Yong and his book, focuses on the calligraphy theory of Qian Yong. The thesis also studies Qian Yong’s ancient concepts, the epigraphy, and the tablet version. Finally, the thesis talks about the achievements and impacts of Qian Yong’s calligraphy.
