This paper mainly research the monsters in Shan Hai Jing and Picture Edition of GuaiQiNiaoShou. First, conclude the morphology and characteristics of the monsters appeared in Shan Hai Jing. Then, research the monsters both appeared in Shan Hai Jing and Picture Edition of GuaiQiNiaoShou and compare them at the following aspects: cultural origin, image characteristics, painting methods, etc. Based on the research and comparison, explain the differences in image characteristics and painting style, and trace the reasons why differences generated.Shan Hai Jing is spread into Japan in the Nara age(AD 710 ~ AD 794, equivalent to Tang Dynasty) or earlier. In the Edo period(AD 1603 ~ AD 1867, equivalent to Ming and Qing Dynasties), the Picture Edition of GuaiQiNiaoShou, which is painting based on the Shan Hai Jing, had been published. The monsters recorded in Picture Edition of Guai Qi NiaoShou developed since the following reasons: integrated the domestic monster system in Japan, were affected by factors in history, culture, and society, and combined the myths and legends. With the development, these ancient monsters in Picture Edition of GuaiQiNiaoShou gradually evolve into various monster images that are active in Japan.At the present time, the monster culture in Japan are more and more prosperous and it has become one of the representative culture. Various paintings and designing based on the monster culture are also becoming more and more prosperous. The monster culture, as one of the significant branch of anthropology, is gradually being faced squarely by more people. Shan Hai Jing is obviously the origin of the monster culture. When emphasizing the localization of designing today, we should focus on the traditional cultural and art more, derive from the matrix of history, integrate the contemporary art with the traditional culture. This should be theconfidence owned by our contemporary artists and the responsibility of Chinese for inheriting national traditional culture.
