| Si-sheng-pian-hai based on Yu-pian, is a dictionary compiled by Han Xiao-yan and his son Han Dao-zhao. 5,4595 Chinese characters are included in this dictionary. No other dictionary has so many characters in ancient times. The characters included deprive from Yu-pian, Long-kan-shou-jing, Yu-wen etc, especially from Yu-pian. Some of the above-mentioned dictionaries have been lost. Fortunately parts of their contents are preserved in Si-sheng-pian-hai. For those handed down, it also has a proof value since they are different from the present counter parts. In the processing of quoting, on one hand there are many mistakes due to careless copying and carving; on the other hand there also exists improper increase or change on the pronunciations and meanings of characters. Since the characters in Si-sheng-pian-hai can not be found in other dictionaries, many dictionaries quote from it, thus the mistakes made in copying and carving of Si-sheng-pian-hai have great influence on the other dictionaries compiled afterward.This thesis intends to make a comparative study of Si-sheng-pian-hai using the relevant knowledge in philology, phonology, exegetics, and lexicography, By comparing the contents of Si-sheng-pian-hai with that of Long-kan-shou-jing this paper will classify the problems in copying and compiling, and discuss the influence of Si-sheng-pian-hai or other dictionaries in the aspects of pronunciation and meaning.
