A Report On The E-C Translation Of The American Woman Playwright

This thesis is a case study report of E-C translation practice. The author has translated Chapter Four of The American Woman Playwright.Under the principles of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance, the author tries to give some solutions through analyzing difficulties in E-C translation practice. This thesis consists of four main parts: task description, task process, case analysis and summary of practice.The American Woman Playwright is a book of literary criticism. It mainly talks about American women playwrights and their works from1930 to 1970. Through analyzing the female characters in these works,Megan Terry tries to find some clues of the development of female’s social standing. Literary criticism works make features of introducing and commenting, which have the similar style of literary works. So at the lexical level, accuracy and specification are needed in E-C translation.Elegant words are good for reproducing the original text when necessary.When met the specific words which are related to the criticized works,translator is expected to find more detailed information of the related works before translating. Besides, according to target readers’ unread about the criticized works, translator needs to specify the substitute words when necessary. At the syntactic level, because Megan Terry has used many long sentences to compare and analysis characters or criticized works, adjustments in order and structure are necessary in these long sentences according to the context. At the textual level, argument and supporting details may be apart in different paragraphs in Megan’s book,so translator needs to embody the linkages between the argument and supporting details.In a word, the thesis is aimed to improve translator’s translating skills,provide feasible translation methods and offer a reference to other translators through the practice.
