Light is the source of all things, always in spite of I can think of "life" term. Life and light in my opinion is a person in the belief things must exist. In the art of painting in space, light language as part of the artist pictures, always going to affect the changes of the times. Different times, different artists on the use of lighting, have a variety of forms, from the initial Visual showing to strong chiaroscuro, to picture a crisp feeling again, becoming a unique means of expression. In the course of use of light and shadow, painter through the screen needs gradually into a kind of inner strength, become part of the picture, which more and more full of personal emotion, is endowed with a symbolic meaning.Light language spoken in three parts, this paper, combined with the extensive literature read through argumentation and analysis of a series of articles described.Part one is about the principles of lighting, shadows, and composition of the picture.The second part is about the light in various stages of use of Western painting, a total of two sections, separated about application profiles and light painting in the West.The third part is the main part of the article, mainly tells the story of light and shadow in Western painting’s symbolic significance. Three-section, in Western religions in the light of the symbolic, in a different light and shadow images of the symbolic, and finally the symbolism in a different light source on the screen. Through these studies,more detailed understanding of the symbolic content of Western painting light and shadow.
