Saul Bellow is universally considered as one of the most siginificant American writers among his contemporary writers and readers all over the world. He is alao recognised as the successor to William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway and Francis Scott Fitzgerald. In 1976, he won Nobel Prize for literature. In Bellow’s novels, he pays much attention to the crisis of spirit in the contemporary currupted society, problems of existence and meaning of lives. In the same time, he reveals the struggle and quest for meanings of their life. We can say without doubt that he shows the modern crisis, problems, desires and pursuit. As a vigorous and productive writer, Bellow published another outstanding novel More Die of Heartbreak in the year of 1987, which is one of his late works. Just like Bellow’s other novels, it tells the tragedy life of the botanist, Benn, through whose life Bellow intends to present some universal problems concernning the relationship among modern marriage, love and family members and reveal some seamy sides of the contemporary society and put forward queries of Benn’s personal character as well. The previous researches on the novel mainly focus on the content and characters of the novel, such as the thematic subject, cultural collision and Jewish identity approval. Some researches on the artistic features and the analysis of the artistic features are just limited to the traditional narrative strategies. More Die of Heartbreak reflects the author’s creative writing skills. This thesis intends to apply Bakhtin’s dialogue theory and to interpret the dialogicity in the novel. The thesis refutes the claim that Bellow’s narrator function as his mouthpiece. Examining the language of More Die of Heartbreak, the thesis demonstrates that there is no single narratorial discourse that can be identified with that of the author. It opens up what is ostensibly a monologue to the possibility of dialogue. It is hoped that the analysis will open up a new perspective for readers to have a more profound understanding of the textual form and thematic meaning of More Die of Heartbreak. This thesis can be divided into four parts. The first part gives a brief introduction of Saul Bellow and the novel, a brief overview of literary review on More Die of Heartbreak, and then the significance and structure of the thesis. Chapter One generalizes the Bakhtin’s dialogue theory and the types of dialogue, especially the macro-dialogue and micro-dialogue. Chapter Two, Three and Four are the main body which analyzes the novel through the features of dialogicity, macro-dialogue and micro-dialogue in the language use. The last part is conclusion, which summaries the whole thesis.
