Analysis Of Cultural Image Problems In C-E Translation Of Idioms And Countermeasures

Previous studies mainly focus on the differences and similarities of Chinese and English idioms without a systematic categories and analysis of these problems. Therefore, on the basis of previous studies, this thesis has analyzed cultural image transmission problems in C-E translation of idioms and proposed corresponding countermeasures to solve these problems.With data excerpted from dictionaries, websites, literature works and so on, and after careful analysis, this thesis has found out such three cultural image transmission problems in C-E translation of idioms as:1) complete loss of cultural images; 2) mismatching of cultural images; 3) corresponding vacancy of cultural images. Guided by the direction of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and the Relevance Theory, the author puts forward such three corresponding countermeasures as:1) to make up images; 2) to replace images; 3) to copy images.By analyzing and solving the cultural image problems in C-E translation of idioms, this research can help improving the quality and acceptability of translated versions of Chinese idioms, make English readers know more about Chinese culture and traditions, and avoid some misunderstandings so that a more smooth and successful cross-culture communication can be carried out.
