In the history of Chinese modern and contemporary literature, Wang Renshu is beyond all doubt a versatile writer. From poetry, novels to essays, literary theory to historical research, translation and publication and so on, he dabbles in all of the above and achieved fruitful results. However, in contrast to his fruitful results, the study on Wang Renshu has not been thoroughly carried out. In many fields of researches on Wang Renshu, although the research on Wang Renshu’s local novels had attracted many researchers’attentions, there is lack of deserved attentions on the transformation of Wang Renshu’s local novels. Therefore, this paper attempts to take Wang Renshu’s transformation of local novels before the founding of the People’s Republic of China as the starting point, focusing on the discussion of its artistic presentation and significance.Except for the introduction and conclusion, this paper is composed of three chapters:The first chapter mainly introduces the life of Wang Renshu and the history of creation of local novels. Wang Renshu’s life is a life of revolution and even more a life of creation. Wang Renshu’s creation of local novels began in the 1920s and continued until the 1950s or 1960s.In the nearly more than half a century of creation of the local novels, Wang Renshu has been in constant transformation and sought for breakthrough trying to comprehensively and really show the current situation of the rural area in Zhejiang Fenghua. Wang Renshu lashed out the feudal system and showed sympathy for the rural grass-roots people in struggling for survival in the 1920s, discussed the reasons of bankruptcy of the rural economy and shaped all kinds of characters in rural areas in the 1930s-1940s, and showed new style and features of countryside and the peasant in the 1950s-1960s, from the beginning to the end, he has never stopped the pace of exploration.The second chapter will go deep into the text of Wang Renshu’s local novels in order to find the artistic presentation of the transformation. From the perspective of shaping the characters, the local novels in 1920s was keen on shaping the middle and lower farmers image, especially the destitute and the bachelor, while the local novels in the 1930s had a panoramic view of assorted people in rural areas, from lower peasants, landlords to rural migrant workers. In terms of language, the language of local novels showed obvious poetic feature in the 1920s, while the language of local novels in the 1930s was more partial to local colloquial. From the style of the local novels, the local novels from the twenty years to the thirty years were experiencing the transformation from simple natural to metaphor sarcasm.The third chapter discusses the significance of the transformation of Wang Renshu’s local novels. From the view of Wang Renshu personal emotion, the transformation of local novels expresses his being stick to the homeland; from the angle of regional literature, the transformation of Wang Renshu’s local novels enrich and promote the development of local novels in Eastern Zhejiang, and is an important part of the local novels in this area; from the perspective of Chinese modern local realistic novels, Wang Renshu’s local novels reflects the development of the process of the modern local realistic novels.
