A Report On The C-E Translation Of Recommendations Of M-time Movies

Movie, whether refined or common, is a category of art loved by people, both young and old. It also plays an important role in cultural transmission. With the rapid development of Chinese movie industry, more and more Chinese films are introduced abroad, which increases the rank of Chinese films in the world and also arouses more and more foreigners’ interest in Chinese movies, especially those living in China. M-time is now the most popular, most detailed and most professional movie website in China. It is an authorized platform with great value and high status to spread movie literature. Therefore, in order to attract more foreign audiences to know more about Chinese culture and the local conditions and customs of China, it is meaningful for us to translate the names and recommendations of Chinese movies on M-time into English. Movie recommendations on M-time, as the initial communicative channel between movies and audiences, plays an important role in improving people’s interest in the movie. This thesis, under the guide of domestication and foreignization strategy, aims to translate the recommendations of M-time movies into English. Some skills for C-E translation of recommendations are summarized from the practice. C-E translating methods of movie titles, names, culture-loaded words as well as long sentences are respectively analyzed in details. For movie title translation, the author adopted the method of transliterating, literal translation, free translation and creative translation; for translation of names, transliteration, literal translation with notes and free translation are used; for culture-loaded words, transliteration, literal translation and literal translation with notes are adopted; as for long sentences translation, the author came up with three methods, namely resequencing, splitting and synthesis. The original text can be well-conveyed and the culture within be well-maintained by using these translating methods. The quality of translation is improved as a result.
