A Research On The Relations Among College Students’ Moral Disengagement,Conscience And Parenting Style

Employing questionnaire method, the empirical research involves506 college students of Hunan City University and examines the current situation of college students’ moral disengagement.in view of individual and family factors, it discusses the relationship among college students’ moral disengagement,conscience and parenting style and the mechanism of action thereof and tries to provide an understanding of the basic characteristics of college students’ moral disengagement and a theoretical basis of intervention in moral disengagement. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The overall degree of the college students’ moral disengagement is medium or slightly low. following is the order of tendency of factors’ being selected as an action mechanism inrange of degree moral disengagement(from high to low): displacement of responsibility,distortion of consequences, dehumanization, diffusion of responsibility,euphemistic labeling, advantageous comparison, attribution of blame and moral justification.(2)Father’s severe punishment and over-protection can positively indicate the level of college students’ moral disengagement, while father’s emotional warmth and understanding can negatively predict the level.(3)Mother’s severe punishment and father’s denial or rejection can negatively predict college students’ level of conscience, while mother’s or father’s emotional warmth and understanding can positively predict college students’ level of conscience.(4)Sympathy, sense of honesty and credibility, sense of right and wrong, forgiveness and gratitude can negatively indicate the level of college students’ moral disengagement.(5)Conscience plays an intervening role in how moral disengagement is affected by parents’ emotional warmth and understanding, parents’ severe punishment, father’s denial or rejection and over-protection impact.
