With the development of economy, the exchange among people from different countries is becoming increasingly frequent. However, due to the existence of cultural differences, a lot of cultural barriers appear in reality. So the translators must eliminate these barriers. Generally speaking, there are two translation strategies:domestication and foreignization. The two trends have long been discussed in the field of translation. For a long time, most scholars tend to adopt a binary opposition towards the two strategies. However, as the debate develops, some scholars tend to adopt a dialectical attitude. This thesis tends to analyze the translation of the common sayings in San Guo Yan Yi in order to make the relationship between the two strategies clear. This thesis collected 122 pieces of common sayings in San Guo Yan Yi from the Dictionary of Common Sayings in Chinese Ancient Novels compiled by Zhai Jianbo, and their corresponding English versions in the two English translations. These common sayings were classified into three groups according to the cultural factors they have:common saying about characters, common sayings about wars and common sayings about the state of an event of object. Through documentary study, case study, comparative study, descriptive and explanatory method and quantitative study, this thesis made a comparative study on the typical 45 pieces of common saying in San Guo Yan Yi. The final statistics show that the percentages of the two translation strategies adopted by the two translators are almost the same. Then the author explored the reasons why these two strategies could survive together and what factors decided the choice of different strategies. In conclusion, translators shouldn’t be partial to either domestication or foreignization. They should pay more attention to foreignization when realizing cultural communication;meanwhile they should adopt domestication when needed.
