This thesis aims to explore whether the translation strategies and methods of culture-loaded words in Gladys Yang’s translation of The Border Town, chosen within the framework of German functionalism, will facilitate the realization of the intended purpose of the translation. By analyzing the participants (the source text, the translator, the initiator Chinese Literature magazine and target text readers) involved, a tentative conclusion is reached that the TT is able to arouse foreign readers’ interest in Chinese literature and culture and promote the overseas dissemination of Chinese literature and culture while establishing a new image of China in the world. This conclusion is further confirmed both by the instrumental translation strategy based on the analysis of the statistic data and by the case study concerning the effective employment of four major translation methods (literal translation, literal translation plus annotation, adaptation, and omission) adopted by Gladys Yang.
