The Analects is regarded as one of the most influential Chinese classical literary works. With globalization and cultural fusion, it also becomes more and more influencial all over the world. As a result, the translation of The Analects is becoming a cultural demand. However, the original text is of great obscurity. In addition, there are tremendous differences between eastern and western languages and cultures. Therefore, great subjectivity is showed in the translation process.Among numerous English versions of The Analects, Ku Hungming’s and Xu Yuanchong’s versions both gain a relatively high acceptance and reputation. Meanwhile, the two versions have a span of more than one hundred years and their translators are both Chinese scholars, which makes them representative of time development and share something in common. Therefore, these two versions are selected as research subjects.Postcolonial translation theory, compared with other postmodern translation theories, pays much more attention to the influence brought by culture. Therefore, this thesis is theoretically based on the theory of Postcolonialism and its translation idea – hybridity. The thesis elaborates the differences of subjectivity by comparing and analyzing different solutions to linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English. On this basis, this thesis also makes an analysis on fluency and resistancy in the translated versions. It demonstrates that when Chinese culture is in a weak status, Ku Hungming tends to follow the principle of fluency; while, when Chinese culture is eager to and gradually gets rid of this weakness, Xu Yuanchong tends to adopt resistancy. Based on Venuti’s definition of resistancy, however, Ku Hungming’s fluency is actually another type of resistancy. These are the most important contributions of this thesis.Through this thesis, the author tries to analyze translator’s subjectivity under the background of culture, revaluate Ku Hungming’s English version of The Analects, advocate Xu Yuanchong’s moderate resistancy and strengthen our cultural identity.
