In ancient Chinese painting, the mineral pigments were called "Dan", which mean that ore can be made into pigments. The Shuowen Jiezi (an early 2nd-century Chinese dictionary from the Han Dynasty) provides definitions of "Dan" and "green":"Dan" is "hematite from Pakistan", also know as cinnabar. "Green" is "the initial color" and it refers to the blue copper and lapis lazuli. In the history of Chinese traditional painting, color plays an important role. Among using mineral pigment had a dominant position. After Song Dynasty, the people’s aesthetic consciousness changes which reflected the people’s aesthetic consciousness and reasonable rate of real feelings. Due to the rise of ink painting, the percentage of using mineral pigment was decreasing. Hence, the mineral pigments only existed in the scroll of the green landscape painting and no longer in the mainstream of art world.Metallic pigment has many characteristics such as an adamant stability and light fastness strong, bright, invariant, beautiful, diaphaneity bad, texture change, good color emissivity, strong coverage. With the development of modern science and technology, modern mineral pigments are constantly being created some varieties. Then these creatures make up for the lack of natural pigments in the expression of color. Also, the metallic pigment is not only a kind of revival but also an innovation, which meets the requirements of modern painting at color, material and texture of the aesthetic purport, also gives people a new visual experience.This paper mainly divided into three parts:the first part briefly expounds the general situation of mineral pigments, which have introduction and features in the traditional painting in the use of inquiry. The second part mainly study in contemporary painting watercolors and there are two sections include the current development situation of the art and the analysis of contemporary fine brushwork mineral pigments use case. The third part focuses on the author in the painting process of using mineral pigments and getting some insights. After this experience, I could understand the characteristics and application prospect of mineral pigments. Therefore, the inheritance and development of mineral pigments are critical. Finally, the conclusion is a summary of the article. Overall, the author believes that the study of mineral pigments could provide more contribution to modern painting.
