A Study About The Meaning In Life,Life Goal And Its Relationship With Self-control In College Students

This study is to know about junior college students’ understanding and experience of the meaning of life and life goals, self-control, and the relation between three aspects. This research sorts out the related literature, introduces the concepts and research status of the meaning of life, life goal and self-control, etc., collects the relevant information through the questionnaire and interview. This study uses the Chinese meaning of life questionnaire(C- MLQ), the life goal scale, the college students’ self-control scale(revised by Wei Lai), and conducts a survey among 445 students in a Shanghai higher vocational college, handing out 445 questionnaires and taking back 445, 399 valid ones of those, 90% are available including 161 boys and 238 girls. Through correlation, regression and other statistical analysis, preliminarily it draws the following conclusions:(1) the overall level:the overall level of junior college students’ experiencing the meaning of life is low; Most of them have no exact life goals. Healthy habits factor is much higher;Inhibition impulsion factor is above the average; Focus-on-work factor is above the average; Rational behavior factor is below the average; Resisting the temptation factor is below the average.(2) Junior college students’ experiencing the meaning of life has a significant difference on whether serving as the class leaders, mothers’ education level, and family type; Pursuing the meaning of life has a significant difference on fathers’ education level; life goals has a significant difference on whether serving as class leaders; self-control has no obvious differences in demography.(3) Through correlation and regression, it gets the relations between the meaning of life, life goal and self control:Life goal is significantly and positively related to the meaning of life, and experiencing and pursuing the meaning of life can significantly and positively predict life goal; experiencing and pursuing the meaning of life is significantly and positively related to focus-on-work factor in self-control scale and can predict it significantly and positively, pursuing the meaning of life is significantly related to resisting the temptation factor and can significantly predict it in self-control scale; Life goal is significantly and positively related to focus-on-work factor in self control and can significantly and positively predict it in self-control scale, however, life goal is significantly and negatively related to inhibition impulsion factor and resisting the temptation factor and can significantly and negatively predict them in self-control scale. The clearer life goal is, the better the ability to inhibit impulsion and resist the temptation is, then the lower the score is.Improving individual’s experiencing and pursuing the meaning of life and promoting establishing the life goal could have an influence on focus-on-work factor, inhibition impulsion factor and resisting the temptation factor in selfcontrol, so as to intervene the self-control.
