《新名词》New Terms and New Ideas—A Study of the Chinese Newspaper is a newspaper that covers teaching material published in 1913 by American missionary Ada Haven Mateer.This thesis aims to conduct textual research on the newspapers compilation background and the arrangement possibilities,as well as introduce a biographical sketch of Ada Haven Mateer.The thesis will also research the characteris tics of vocabulary,grammar,and the register of language used in this book.The paper is divided into five chapters as follows:The first chapter discusses the significance of the topic. A detailed introduction of the present studies on newspaper teaching materials, New Terms, New Ideas, Ada Haven, the theories and the methods adopted, as well as the sources of the materials that will be put forward in this chapter.The second chapter summarizes the content and background of this book, and introduces the author and her life. The purpose, content and style of composition demonstrate New Terms as rudimentary newspaper teaching material. By comparing the new terms,Modern Newspaper Chinese Progressive readings with vocabulary notes and translations, Newspaper Language Tutorial explore the evolution of newspaper teaching materials.The third chapter analyzes the feature of vocabulary. Ada paid attention to time,describing and practicality,when she chose the words. We trace to the source of "noun" to infer that the noun came from Japan. Most vocabulary is compiled of Japanese loanwords and syllables and some new affixes are used. Ada was teaching the word to pay attention to the word classification, classification teaching; timely supplementary reading materials, the use of the word display context, so that students can better understand and grasp the words of words; to cultivate students’ cognitive ability by analogy.The fourth chapter runs through the gradual process of a register of language and grammar. At the end of nineteenth Century, the Chinese have three styles including Wênli(classical Chinese), simple Wênli(simple classical Chinese) and Guanhua. According to Ada, the main style of written language is simple Wênli. This chapter analyzes the sentences of New terms, discusses the phenomenon of Europeanization grammar in simple Wênli and the method of language teaching. Ada recognized the differences between Chinese and English grammar. She made Chinese grammar more easily understandable by adopting the use of vocabulary teaching instead of grammar teaching, and the use of English grammar to analyzes the Chinese grammar phenomenon.The last part is the basic evaluation of New Terms and New Ideas —A Study of the Chinese Newspaper. This is the newspaper teaching material written by Ada Haven Mateer. It is a collection of late nineteenth Century to early twentieth Century Chinese new words, and truly reflects the real situation of Chinese at the beginning of twentieth Century. It was the first time the newspaper article contained as teaching content, New terms is a budding news material.
