The Analysis Of "用V(P)的" In Mandarin

In Chinese, the manner case marking 用, combined with V(P), is able to structure the phrase 用 V(P) which means in the manner of VP. 用 V(P) 的 is a typical phrase in Minnan dialect as well as a common expression in the universal language of Taiwan. With the frequent communication between both sides of the Straits for the past few years, this phrase is used by people in mainland gradually.In this thesis, the syntactic function, variants, replaceable phrase and features of constituents of 用 V(P) 的 are studied systematically. This research demonstrates, 用 V(P) 的 can act as adverbial adjunct, predicate, subject and modifier, which acts, however, in different way in language use in mainland. The investigation on its usage in mainland shows it nearly cannot act as modifier. There are two variants of 用 V(P) 的, one is 用 V(P), the other is 用 V1 着 V2(P). The replaceable predicate phrase of 用 V(P) 的 contains 用 V 的 方式, V and V 着. Although there are some differences among them, they can be replaced by others in some conditions.The 用 in 用 V(P) 的 is a word whose part of speech are both preposition and verb, perhaps, which indicates it is still in the grammaticalizational process. The difference of its usage in both sides of the Straits shows that 用 has a higher level of grammaticalization in Taiwan than in mainland. The majority of verbs of motional verbs and psychological verbs can be placed in the phrase, while the causative verbs. dummy verbs, directional verbs, judgment verbs, substantive verbs and modal verbs cannot. The 的 in 用 V(P) 的 plays as a nominal post-component attached behind V(P) to form a self-designative de(的)-phrase, i.e.V(P)的, which refers the manner.The theoretical findings in this research is that 用 in "用V(P)的" is a manner case marking and has an important impact on the semantic reference of VP 的. Specifically, the case marking 用 acts on the semantic reference of VP 的 before factors such as syntax, context and cognition. Not all manner case marking can, however, be combined with VP 的 realizing self-designative function. The requirement is the case marking can introduce the manner case and is, meanwhile, of marked verbality.
