A Project Report On The Translation Of The DIARY Of VIRGINIA WOOLF VOLUME Ⅳ

This is a project report on the translation which focuses on the part of The Diary Of Virginia Woolf, Volume IV:1931-1935 in 1932. As an authoritative source on Woolf, The Diary of Virginia Woolf is not only the proof of daily material accumulation for her literary creation, but also where she practiced her writing skills. The aim of the translation project is to be both helpful for further study on Woolf and appealing to those Chinese who are interested in stream-of-consciousness novels.In consideration of great creativity and unique writing-style Woolf has shown, the translation of content within some stream-of-consciousness techniques (such as free association, internal analysis, inversion of time and space, and montage) should be an inevitable test in this project. Featured with polysemy, loose sentence-structure, fragments and lack of semantic coherence, the source-text of daily application should be translated with a special care of its stream-of-consciousness literariness. Thus, Text Typology Theory, presented by the functional theorist Katharina Reiss, has been employed in the translating process. The source-text being a hybrid of informative text and expressive text, the translating methods of "Explicit Verbalization" and "Identification’" required, the translator has chosen the foreignization strategy and some translating skills to convey the artistical form of the source-text as well as to ensure the target-text readable and acceptable to Chinese readers.At the end of the report, the author summarizes the lessons learned from the project, such as the great importance of translation preparation, and that the employment of theoretical knowledge should be flexibly adapted for the aim and function of target-text. Also, there is one main issue of polysemy with literariness not quite settled, and how to maintain in target-text the contained aesthetic connotations still remains to be discussed.
