The tradition of Chinese ancient prose study have exercised a profound influence on East Asian Chinese culture circle, thus having called responses from foreign scholars accordingly. Such mutual interacts involves how foreign scholars manage to communicate with their Chinese counterparts despite of time and spatial limits by creating virtual dialogues. For instance, Rai Sanyo(赖山阳), who lived in Edo period, is a representative scholar in this field. Rai possesses abundant Chinese writing experience. In the meantime, he bears a sense of mission in culture and theoretical awareness in prose study. Moreover, he made full use of the historical accumulation of Sino-Japan cultural communications and contemporary advantages to organize and comment on several selective works of Chinese prose. The textual conditions and theoretical value of those books haven’t been paying enough attention for a long time. Considering Rai’s identity of a brilliant critic, this dissertation is intended to conduct a synthesized research on his critical selections of Chinese prose in order to assess his accomplishment and achievements. On the other hand, a unique dimension of understandings of Chinese prose study could be observed via studying his critical scales of Chinese prose study.This dissertation consists of three main parts, namely Preface, Part A and Part B.The Preface mainly introduces the researching background and Rai’s profiles, which confining the researching orientation and basic methods. The Part A deals with his specific works one by one. Directed by original texts and his identity of a critic, his critical standpoint and sensibility on literature are analyzed to discover how he cope with the spatial obstacles and to show the thoughts he expressed through the critical methods, for instance, the use of loops, dots and lines. Part B concentrates on his theoretical significance hidden behind his critical practices, which may reveal his individuality and background via his critical methods and theoretical constructions consisting of several characteristics of critical methods and prose study views as a consequence. Those founding theories behind his critical activities are surveyed with the purpose of concluding his constructing value of Chinese prose study.
