English Madrigals was closely related to the 16 th century Italian Madrigals, and it might have some commercial profits implication. At first, Englishmen just translated the 16 th century Italian Madrigals. Being familiar with Italian Madrigals, more and more English native composers write this genre. And some of English Madrigals were excellent pieces. They were written by that English native composers, such as Morley, Weelkes and Wilbye, whom were well known as the‘English Madrigal School’. With the help of the English Madrigals music prints, this genre was popular among the Middle Class at that time. However, in 17 th century, Italian Madrigals had given way to Monody and Opera, and the English Madrigals also had a decline. After 1630, for various kinds of reasons, composers did not write the English Madrigals. Fortunately, people still sing and study English Madrigals at present. The history of English Madrigals composition is merely less than fifty years. Why the history is so short? In order to reply this question, I will find the reasons from its background, origin, development and morphological character of music.
