Study On The Historical Geography Of Xiangxiang City

Xiangxiang city, locating in central Hunan Province, was established in the early years of the Eastern Han Dynasty. In history, its economic foundation is good.However, its urban construction was relatively slow. After the founding of new China,urban construction in Xiangxiang City developed rapidly, gradually stepping towards modernized city. Xiangxiang is an important entity of Changzhutan economic circle,and the foundation of the industry and agriculture is good. In recent years, Xiangxiang City construction has developed fast. With urban area of 20 square kilometers at present, Xiangxiang City is one of medium-small cities whose urbanization level is relatively higher in Hunan Province. By 2015, Xiangxiang City has become one of the economic system reform pilot counties administered by Hunan Province, which provides a great opportunity for the development of Xiangxiang City. Based on this point, the subject is to study the change of Xiangxiang city, which can help to comb the development track and understand the history and current status of Xiangxiang city on one hand, and on the other hand to summarize the historical experience and lessons and provide the reference for the development of Xiangxiang city.Xiangxiang city, with its more favorable climate, hydrology, topography,provides good natural conditions for the development of local agriculture at early stage, which is the basis of the establishment of Xiangxiang city. In ancient times our ancestors lived and reproduced here and the local inhabitants was complicated, mainly Chu and Yue nationalities. In order to strengthen the management here, Han government set up Xiangxiang county. Xiangxiang city has established and developed here. Since then, many immigrants came here. They worked together, communicated with each other, and gradually formed unique customs and language culture typical of Xiangxiang city.The history of Xiangxiang city has had more than one thousand years so far.From Song Dynasty, the development of Xiangxiang city gradually accelerated. In the mid of Ming Dynasty, Xiangxiang city began to take shape. With the development of agriculture and constantly increasing population, the handicraft industry, commerce,culture, education and so on developed and Xiangxiang city expanded, forming a "San Jie Jiu Xiang Shi Ba Nong" pattern. The modernization of Xiangxiang started late, and developed slowly. During the period of Republic of China, with political instability, the urban construction of Xiangxiang city has been very backward.After the establishment of new China, the development of Xiangxiang city has entered a new stage, and the urban area has been expanding. Especially since the beginning of this century, urbanization of Xiangxiang city has speeded up and the infrastructure construction tend to be complete. However, urban construction is also facing a lot of problems, such as the deterioration of ecological environment, the difficulty of old city transformation, lack of urban culture. How to break the bottleneck of the urban development consists in whether scientific and reasonable urban planning program can be formulated and implemented effectively. The author thinks that the development of Xiangxiang City consists in handling properly the relationship between urban construction and protection of the old city, protecting the ecological environment, enhancing urban cultural tastes, developing tourism, and taking “economic development, cultural prosperity, social civilization, good ecology”path of urban development.
