Lao Zi Dao De Jing Gu Ben Ji Zhu writing by Fan Ying Yuan, was an important book of annotating Lao Zi in Song dynasty. Which had the value both on version and thought. Whatever to textual research about Lao Zi or to thinking illustration, it also possessed appreciable historical significance and modern value. The thesis based on a few studies of Fan Ying Yuan, through the comparative study, combining concept analysis with historical background and popular thoughts, firstly digging into the main purpose and spiritual connotation of Fan’s annotation of Lao Zi with Heart.Apart from the Introduction, the rest of the dissertation is divided into three parts. In the first chapter, firstly, the whole life of Fan Ying Yuan has been reviewed in order to infer the possible writing period of his Lao Zi Dao De Jing Gu Ben Ji Zhu (1253-1259) and whether he wrote the Zhuang Zi Jiang Yu or not in the light of the attainable existing studies, the possible influence from one sect of Taoism named Jing Ming Dao also is excluded. Secondly, given the precious value of Lao Zi Dao De Jing Gu Ben Ji Zhu of Fan Yin Yuan itself, the feature and significance of restoring some other critical versions of annotating Lao Zi by different authors including He Shang Gong, Wang Bi, Fu Yi, have been discussed and thus the value and significance of "Gu Ben" as what Fan Yin Yuan called the authentic Lao Zi have been highlighted. Finally, two remarkable characteristics, annotating Lao Zi with the concept of "Heart" and differentiating himself from Su Zhe, are introduced as the special perspectives from which Fan Yin Yuan started his annotation. The two special perspectives are the main points of this dissertation which focuses on how Fan Yin Yuan annotated Lao Zi.The second chapter expounds the characteristics and connotation of the "Heart" as Fan Yin Yuan claimed and preliminarily reveals the thought of integrated cultivation in NeiDan Tao in his annotation. As two key concepts of integrated cultivation in NeiDan Tao, Shen and Qi are combined with the "Heart" by Fan who penetrated the "Heart" of peculiarities into the elaboration of Shen and Qi. By relating to Shen and Qi, the definition of Heart obtains the best way to illuminate itself, thus the thought of integrated cultivation is also correctly illustrated and acted at the same time.In the third chapter, firstly, the historical effect on Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism of the concept of "Heart" has been reviewed, especially on the debate (which one is the highest being) of Heart, Xing or Li between different Confucian authors in Song dynasty. All of these efforts provide the historical background and ideological nutrient for annotating Lao Zi by Fan and Su. To some extent, these ideological differences stand for the conflicts in that age. Therefore, the comparative vision is lie into a more wide view. On the basis of analyzing of "Xing" which has been used by Suzhe to annotate Lao Zi, the differences of thoughts between Fan and Su have been clarified in three respects and thus the spiritual connotation of annotating Lao Zi with "Heart" has been more obviously highlighted. The three aspects are respectively different understandings of Tao, diverse views on sages and the visible discrepancies between Heart and Xing. The final conclusion is that, on the basis of summarizing the main content of this dissertation, I illustrate the academic value and contemporary meaning of Fan’s annotation.
