This paper explores the subject’s creativity of landscape sketching, and puts forward that the important significance of sketching is not just to describe the scenery mechanically but to create the works which can express vitality during sketching. Creators may have creative consciousness and subject’s thinking through creating imagery. They may find themselves through sketching scenery and change the process of creating imagery into the process of subjective thinking and expression, which will make landscape sketching acquire subjective initiative and more interactivity between creating imagery and sketching. This paper principally includes three parts. Chapter one provides an interpretation of the concept "sketching" which jumps out of western context, and then proposes that "sketching is a way of creation" based on the understanding of traditional Chinese painting. Chapter two defines two concepts "sketching" and "representation" and then illustrates other contents and functions of sketching excepting for tracing and representation specifically and thoroughly. Chapter three, on the basis of the above chapters, emphasizes the way to manifest subject’s creativity, and interprets it from three dimensions. Through systematic review, the author holds that sketching with subject’s creativity can break restrictions of time and space. It is not just to represent scenery objectively, what’s more, it is to explore unique personal understanding and feelings towards scenery and to mould natural spirit for his inner world. There are some discussions on sketching in the previous studies, but they are not comprehensive in discussing function and meaning of subject’s creativity of sketching. This paper, taking the ancients’ discussion on sketching and creating imagery as the talking point, combines the theory research and practice in modern and contemporary so as to have a further understanding of the important significance of adding subject’s creativity into sketching.
