Alice Monroe, known as a "great master of modern short story", was the first writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature depending on her achievement in short stories. Before won the Nobel Prize for literature, Monroe has not been known to Chinese readers, but already renowned in Canada and the United States. She won lots of European and American literary awards, and was called the "Canadian Chekhov". As a female writer, Monroe is good at reflecting the growing experience and life of common people by using meticulous observation and exquisite brushwork. By using gender theory, we try to explore the male and the female image in Monroe’s short stories. By using feminist narratology, we try to analyze Alice Monroe’s "female writing", and give her a systematic analysis and evaluation from the point of gender. This paper has five parts. The first part is introduction, this part mainly introduces Alice Monroe’s life and literary achievements, the research status in Monroe’s novel at home and abroad, the general explanation of gender theory. The second part analyzes male characters in Monroe’s novels from the points of "the temperament of poet", physical disease and the lack of courage. This part tells us that men have the same gender weakness compared with women, they are not as powerful as described in our gender stereotypes. The third part analyzes Monroe’s female images in novels. This part selects typical female characteristics in Monroe’s novels to demonstrate the awakening and resistance of women in her works, and finish the construction of the new female image. Combined with female narrative, the fourth part analyzes techniques and characteristics of Alice Monroe’s "female writing" from the points of choice of female literature, female narrative perspective and female gothic elements, to discuss her unique artistic charm in his works as a female writer. Combining with four chapters above, the last part emphasizes Monroe’s concern for the fate of women and the thought of the relationship between men and women in her short novels.
