Nowadays, some translators and translation researchers, especially those who study literary translation, tend to have misunderstandings on scientific translation. They think that scientific translation is not translation in a strict sense. In fact, scientific translation is an extra-special translation type, which has particular features, such as the patent translation. By translating foreign patent documents, we are able to learn inventions in the forefront of science and technology in the world. And by knowing the documents of those inventions, we can know how to protect intellectual properties from our own talents in a better way. This report is based on the writer’s patent translation internship in BJRWS(Beijing RWS Science & Technology Information Consultancy Co., Ltd., BJRWS for short), which is the wholly subsidiary of RWS Group in the UK. And the original materials of this report are US patent applications. In this report, the writer shows the features of patent documents, the readers of patent documents, purpose and significance of patent translation, and translation process and case analysis. Through the case analysis, the writer exhibits the translation process of patent applications critically using Eugene A. Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory. It is supposed that combining appropriate translation skills and methods, the theory can give great guidance on patent translation, realize equivalence of vocabularies and sentences. During translating, a translator should adjust translation strategies and utilize various translation methods, meanwhile accurately transfer information of the source documents and ensure the smoothness of the translation in order to facilitate understanding of the source texts by the readers, thereby achieving the goal of translation. The writer hopes that the report may provide certain experience and guidance for patent translation in the field of vehicles.
