A Report On E-C Translation Of Patent Specification From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The rapid growth of globalization and the raising of China's international standing bring a sharp increase in the amount of foreign patent applications.To apply for patent rights in China,patent specifications are required to be translated into Chinese.A high-quality translation means a lot to whether a foreign patent application can get a Chinese patent successfully.However,there is lack of training and relevant guiding textbooks for patent translators in China.Under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory and based on the features of patent specifications,this report,with practical translation cases the author finished in the translation platform of IPPH as examples,mainly discusses and explores difficulties and problems encountered in the course of translation: mistranslation of neologism,incorrect voice transformation,logic confusion,mistranslation of long sentences and lack of readability.By classifying these difficulties and analyzing the reasons,the author puts forward respective solutions for different problems from lexical,syntactical,textual and stylistic dimensions in accordance with the Functional Equivalence Theory.At lexical level,translators can use literal translation,creative translation and original meaning-tracing translation to translate neologisms.At syntactical level,translators can apply modeling translation for fixed expressions,split and restructure long sentences to produce an explicit translation,and use drawing-aided translation for the description of complex processes or procedures.At textual and stylistic level,translators can add relevant conjunctions to show the logic relationship in and among sentences and rearranging information to maintain the cohesion,readability and formality of the source text in the target text.This report is expected to provide valuable references and suggestions for future translators engaged in this field.
