Since the 1990 s, culture square has been widely established in cities and countryside in China, the square dance also arose at the same time. The square dance is easy to display, participate and imitate for people. As a result, it has played a leading role in people’s daily life. Since many people have been a part of square dance, the dance has been an important part of community sports and cultural activities. As a new rising sports activity, it can improve people’s health and enrich people’s spiritual life. The author conducted a survey of square dance participants in downtown and suburban part of Shanghai and participated the first square dance contest in order to study the development and influence factors of square dance. This paper mainly uses the literature review method, interview method, questionnaire survey, mathematical statistics and logical analysis to investigate and analyze the current situation, existing problems and influencing factors of the project of square dance, and draws the following conclusion:First, of the 896 people being surveyed, the majority of them is women. Their age ranges from 51 to 60 years old. Most of people surveyed have a degree from high school or secondary school. It clearly indicates that their level of education is relatively low. In addition, most of them is retired and their average income is about 2,501-5,000 RMB per month.Second, most square dance participants began to dance three years ago. They like to excise about sixty-one to ninety minutes at night and do exercise at least once a day. More than fifty percent of the participants don’t pay for square dances. The activity is voluntary organized and participants choose medium speed popular songs or folk music. More than sixty percent of participants don’t have attended in performances and competitions in the community. Most participants are satisfied with the activity site and usually choose a site like a square or a community center to exercise. The environment is important to exercisers and they prefer locations with trees, flowers and blue sky, but there are usually many other activities held nearby at the same time so there isn’t enough good place to square dance participants. Also, this exercise can improve people’s health and sleeping quality, bring people with a cheerful mood, and increase the interpersonal communication. In addition, the participants enjoy participating in the square dance and think that the development of square dance has created a good opportunity for people to improve their personal health.Third, some problems exist in the development of square dance. First, the society and government have not paid enough attention to the development of the dance. Second, the activity sites are too small and do not have shelters and rest places for enough people. Last, there are not enough funding to hire people to guard exercisers’ personal belongings and the occupation of public space is also a problem.Fourth, 50 elements of square dance have been analyzed and classified. We discussed and drew a conclusion based on 6 basic factors: individual demand, organizational management, activity style, participation requirements, content and risk management. For individual demand, the square dance can help people achieve personal, social and respect needs. For organization management, the square dance needs funding from business organizations, individual, self-financing and government supporters. For activity style, the increase of square dance activities, the achievement of performance activities can also influence square dance. For participation requirement, the square dance needs to specify the volume of the dance music, hire square dance expert to teach, and specify the exercise time. For content, increase the variety of the dance and the quality of the music will enhance the improvement of the square dance. For risk management, problems such as disturbing nearby residents, competing exercise space and occupying public space need to be solved.According to these six elements, the author has the following six suggestions: 1. create different styles of square dance; 2. improve participation of square dance competition; 3. construct supporting facilities and ensure safety of the activities; 4. encourage people to participate; 5. increase capital investment and establish autonomous organizations; 6. prevent negative risk and form a positive cycle of square dance.
