The Study On The Cultural Connotation Of Lao’s Brocade Pattern

Laos boasts not only a long history and a diverse minority culture, but a unique custom and an ancient minority tradition. The handmade brocade, of which the Laotians are proud, is the best among all the craft in Laos. With its bright colors, vivid visual effects, beautiful design, the handmade brocade demonstrates distinctive national features. Through classification and collection of patterns, this thesis analyzes its culture behind the design.At first, this thesis illustrates its selecting topic background,research situation at home and abroad, study method and content,Then the paper introduces the general situation of Laos brocade, including the history of brocade, textile process and utility.Thirdly it shows the characteristics of artistic beauty of one’s tapestry of Laos.Fourthly,it introduced the rich brocade patterns and classified them one by one, including five categories: myth religious pattern, animals, plants, transport patterns and geometric patterns. The fifth part explained the culture contained in these designs, analysis brocade pattern mapping in the religious culture and folk culture.This article finally summarizes the current situation of Laos brocade and problems it faced, and give some constructive suggestions towords the inheritance and development of Laos brocade.Under the premise of knowing the implication of the brocade’s patterns, on the one hand, the methods of statistics and classification are employed to summarize and analyze the brocade’s patters. On the other hand, the cultures and beliefs behind the brocade are studied. Knowing the patterns of the brocade is beneficial to have a better understanding of Laos’ s society, aesthetic features and totems, which contributes to the understanding of the brocade’s essence and Laos’ s art and culture.
