The political and economic reform with the process of democratization in Tanzania had started since the mid and late 1980s. Henceforth, Tanzania’s authoritarian regime turned into democratic regime and Tanzania became one of the most successful democratic African countries. The main contents of this thesis are:the reason and characteristic of the political and economic crisis Tanzania faced with before the reform; the start of the political and economic reform under the requirements of multiple parties and domestic needs; the major measures of the political and economic reform and their influence on Tanzania’s democratization process; and in the end, the brief comment on Tanzania’s political and economic reform with the process of democratization. This thesis is divided into four parts. Part one is about the political and economic crisis Tanzania suffered in late 1970s and early 1980s. The main cause of the economic crisis in Tanzania is the improper economic policy Tanzania took on the basis of Arusha Declaration. The economic crisis resulted in the political crisis. This made the once honest and upright Tanzanian civil servants corrupt. With the help of Tanzanian single-party system, the corruption expanded rapidly and became the general mood of society and social regulation. At that time, the Tanzanian political elites were trying to solve the crisis with democracy.Part two is about the political restructuring in the process of democratization with the domestic and overseas effects. Single-party system was replaced by multi-party system. At the same time, local government reform, whose key point was decentralization, had been carried out, and malversation, which caused the Tanzanian political crisis, had been controlled. The development of non-governmental organizations (NGO) also accelerated Tanzanian democratization process.Part three is about the economic reform in the process of democratization. The economic reform was split into two periods. The first period is from 1985-1995, the second one is from 1995-2015. These two reform periods led Tanzania to the market-oriented liberal economy. The economic reform was a success because it not only made up the economic stagnation since 1980s, but also activated the Tanzanian economy in 21st century. The last part of this thesis is about the brief comments on the political and economic reform with the process of democratization in Tanzania. Namely, the role political and economic reform played in promoting democratization; the defects of Tanzanian political and economic reform; merits in Tanzanian process of democratization and reasons why Tanzanian democratization tops among African countries.
