Language and culture are interdependent and indivisible, so the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language should also include the contents of culture. As a second language teaching, the main aim of teaching Chinese as a foreign language is to cultivate overseas students’ ability to cross-cultural communication, thus enabling them properly use Chinese to exchange with Chinese people, tackle real life problems and obstacles, and improve the ability of language expression.Coming to language learning, the focus on "speaking" is always by no means the most important core. And for the early and intermediate level overseas students, oral English learning is mainly dependent on the imitation of teaching materials. In this thesis, it adopts the cross-cultural communication perspective to explore the promotion function of the learning materials of cultural factors on cross-cultural communication: it can help the overseas students to understand and grasp Chinese culture, eliminate misunderstandings and communication barriers towards different cultures, and enhance ability of cross-culture communication. Meanwhile, this paper selects current widely used early and intermediate spoken Chinese textbooks “The Development of Chinese” as the study objects, preliminarily attempting to classify and quantify the materials related to the cultural factors in the form of tables.Through analysis of the data, we find the advantages of textbooks about the cultural factors, including holistic, representative, systematic and practical characteristics; there are also some shortcomings, such as the unbalanced proportion of cultural factors, lack of the polite and cultural characteristics and limitation of non-linguistic cultural factors and the enjoyment. Directing at the problems of cultural factors in teaching materials, this thesis puts forward some feasible suggestions on the compilation of cultural factors, including proportion of coordination of semantic, pragmatic and cultural factors, embodiment of politeness features, the increased non-lingustic cultural factors and more attention on the interestingness of cultural factors. The aim of studying teaching materials is to better carry out teaching. Therefore, we should not only be concerned about the teaching materials, but also should consider the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. This thesis puts forward the teaching strategies of cultural factors, with the specific methods such as the enhanced cross-cultural awareness of teachers, the combination of classroom teaching and extracurricular practice, comparative analysis method and so on. I hope that this study can have somewhat contribution to the preparation of oral Chinese textbooks, the teaching of cultural factors, and the enhancement of overseas students’ cross-cultural communicative competence.
