| The novel Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out is one of the representative works of Mo Yan, which has been achieved wide attention around the world since its publication in 2006. Howard Goldblatt, as a famous sinologist and Chinese literature translator in the western world and the translator of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, his translation ideas about Chinese literatures provide some valuable experiences and reference for other translators and meanwhile, his translation promotes the spreading of Chinese excellent literary works overseas.Eco-translatology is a brand-new translation theory proposed by Professor Hu Gengsheng. Eco-translatology stresses the center role of the translator and the influence on translation activities caused by eco-environment. It views translation as translator’s selecting activities to adapt to eco-environment. The thesis analyzes cases of the translation of folk art forms in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out based on the theory of eco-translatology and studies translator’s center role and Howard Goldblatt’s adaptations to and selections of Chinese traditional culture from linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension.This thesis discovers that Howard Goldblatt does corresponding adaptation and selection when translating different folk art forms. Meanwhile, Goldblatt makes appropriate adjustments to adapt to the eco-environment of readers. In the process of translation, Goldblatt adopts strategies of both domesticating translation and foreignizing translation properly, and combines different translation methods and skills such as literal translation, free translation, addition, and omission to achieve transformation from multiple dimensions. Based on this, the thesis verifies the influence caused by eco-environment and translator’s important role in the process of translation. It is hoped that the thesis can promote the English translation of folk art forms and the development of researches on their translations. |
