A Study On The Modal Particle In Xiangyang Dialect

Modal particle is an important feature of Chinese language. The study on dialectal modal particle can not only help us understand the essence and feature of modal particle deeply but also provide living material and evidences for the historical research on modal particle. Xiangyang dialect is a small branch of the southwest mandarin whose usage covers the entire Huguang domain. It has very special features in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in comparison with others but few research results were ever reported in previous studies, let alone the modal particles. Based on the research of the modal particles in Xiangyang dialect, with the help of field survey, analyzing, and current methods, this essay makes a systematic description and analysis from the synchronic perspective, investigates and explores the meaning of them. At last, we summarize some features and meanings of modal particle in Xiangyang dialect.This thesis can be divided into three major parts, including nine chapters:The first part:Introduction (chapter one). First, we introduced Xiangyang and Xiangyang dialect. Second, we analyzed the research of modal particle and the definition of mood and modal particle. We also stated the aim, sense, questions and main methods. Finally, we introduced the language materials of this study and the style instructions.The second part:Classification and description (chapter two to chapter seven).we divided modal particle into six categories:statement of modal particle, doubt modal particle, imperative modal particle, exclamatory modal particle, temporary modal particle, and virtual modal particle, a total of 21 modal particles(including some words occurring in two or three types concurrently). Then, we analyzed each modal particle, and analyzed contrastively the similar modal particles.The third par:The modal particle system of Xiangyang dialect (chapter eight).we made a summary about modal particle in Xiangyang dialect. Then, we analyzed the speed structure, the distribution of the syntactic and the sequence. At the end, we summarized several major features of modal particle in Xiangyang dialect.
