A Translation Practice From The Perspective Of Semantic And Communicative Translatiom

Since Mo Yan became the first native writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, his Chinese literary works have drawn more attention from the critics and the readers. Under the diverse translation standards, how to choose the appropriate translation theories and translation strategies has become the focus of interest. Mo Yan’s novels have been translated into many languages, but most of his short stories are not available to English versions.Based on the theories of Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation as well as the translated texts of other Chinese short stories, the writer of this paper, taking text on the representative short story of Moyan, White Dog and the Swing, conducts a study on the C-E translation of short stories in terms of words, sentences, discourse logic and figures of speech. By analyzing the main difficulties in translation, the writer summarizes some translation strategies in translation, such as semantic translation, communicative translation, literal translation, division and combination.This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter One introduces the background of the study and the theories of Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation. Chapter Two analyzes the main difficulties in translation and the corresponding solutions. Chapter Three summarizes some translation strategies in translating words, sentences, discourse and figures of speech. Chapter Four discusses implications and practical significance of the study, in hope for providing certain reference to the C-E translation of short stories.
