The Five Dynasties figure paintings in the history of Chinese figure paintings occupies an important position. Its style inherits the middle and late Tang Dynasty more than thread bearing, there have been painters Gu Hongzhong, Wang Qihan, Zhou Wenju and Zen painters Guan Xiu, Shi Ke and so on. There are two kinds of different aesthetic style about The Five Dynasties’ flowers and birds, which says "the richness of Huang family, and the wildness of Xu Xi." Their paintings show a distinct geographical style in figure painting due to the rulers’ love and attention. One side, the academy inherited the legacy of the Tang Dynasty painting "portrait" to preach holiness. Their works focus on graceful and fine style which are more refined than the Tang Dynasty painting "portrait". While others painters are more precious of the themes of gods, taoists and strang ancient secluded characters than the academy. Their works are not constrained to anything with forceful and exaggerated images which are completed in "ink play"-lines in pen hastily. Their artistic language is unique in the Five Dynasties art painting and had a great and far-reaching influence on later dynasties.The aesthetic styles "richness" and "wildness" of the Five Dynasties figure paintings have been researched which of discussed from the overall style to the specific drawing language. First, the origin of "richness" and "wildness" is introduced in the flowers and birds, which leads to two aesthetic styles of figure paintings in the Five Dynasties. The figure paintings are described in its aesthetic style by summarizing the representative in the Five Dynasties. The "richness" style is mainly researched by the paintings of Gu Hongzhong, Zhou Wenju, Wang Qihan, Ruan Gao, and the "wildness" style is mainly researched by the Zen paintings of Guan Xiu, Shi Ke. Next, The reasons are analyzed for the formation of the two kinds of aesthetic style in the Five Dynasties, which has been papered about the inheritance and development from the Tang Dynasty painting, the regional imbalance of figure painting, different personality and situation of the painters, the effect of Zen. In the third chapter, the aesthetic styles are papered with a detailed interpretation of paintings and discussed from the perspective of the subject, the form, line, color and other aspects of the paintings performance language. Last, the paper expounds the influence of the performance style of the Five Dynasties figure paintings on the later generations, which have been discussed respectively about the academy figure paintings and freehand figure painting painters such as Liang Kai, Fa Chang, etc.The purpose of this paper is to explore the unique aesthetic styles of the Five Dynasties figure painting, so that people can have a further awareness and understanding the aesthetic style of the Five Dynasties figure paintings.
