Hui Yu is one of leading artists, in the new age, of C hinese meticulous flowers-and-birds paintings, whose works, calm but not restless, exhibit a variety of fresh and elegant feeling which is beyond ordinary. In complicated social circumstance and complex art trends, nowadays, she places herself on the bridge between tradition and modernism. Without following the mainstream, not only is she brave in exploring the new art manifestation actively but also paying attention on the traditions by means of creating based on the down-to-earth transmission of it, which gives a push to the transmission as well as development of the current Chinese meticulous flowers-and-birds paintings. Hence, it is of significance to study.With further development of the reform and opening- up policy, Chinese culture is going abroad. Consequently, the interaction of global culture, especially on diversity and informatization of art, inevitably has an impact on the development of C hinese meticulous flowers-and-birds paintings. Specifically, the concept of art, the ways of thinking and the interest of performance become infinitely diverse continually. What we, painting learners who live in the moment, have to study is how to transmit, absorb and develop the artistic nature and essence of C hinese traditional painting in this background of cultural internationalization. Beyond question, Hui’s works are breaking a new path for the field of contemporary painting because, from beginning to end, she keeps in touch with tradition. As a result, her works can not only maintain the antique features of C hinese traditional paintings and achieve the innovation to some extent but also make viewers think of the gentle and lyric oriental style. As the daughter of Jigao Yu, one of great masters of Chinese meticulous flowers-and-birds paintings, Hui, at first, gained enlightenment of painting from her father. Then, she learned it from Zhifo C hen, Jigao ’s teacher, and, later, followed the painting styles of both Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty after the entrance of Jiangsu C hinese Painting Institute. After devoting herself to learning for quite a few years, she benefited a lot from those artists of Song Dynasty whose painting styles tend to be fresh, peaceful, elegant and understated. Being one of young female painters emerged lately, Hui is a hardheaded explorer and innovator based on the transmission of tradition, which is different from those who are intended to be ostentatious change- makers. Nowadays, in restless social environment, she is able to engage on painting with peaceful mentality and acquires some achievement, reputation and a great prospect, which, with no doubt, is setting a good example for youngsters to devote themselves to learning painting.Through the interpretation of such aspects as Hui’s learning experience, living background, time feature, emotional personality, works style and painting ideas, etc., this paper, with pictures marrying words, adopting research-analysis method, induction-research method and induction-deduction method, has systematically analyzed the reasons why Hui converted her painting style and the ideas, on painting philosophy and aesthetics, that her magnum opus suggests, apart from which, it also has witnessed the evolution of her painting style in each period of time and dissected the characteristic of her works in detail. In order to obtain more direct-viewing information and have a knowledge of some related progressive trends, theoretical studies, etc., the author examined, collated and analyzed large amounts of documentation on Chinese meticulous flowers-and-birds paintings as well as Hui’s biographical information by, such as, participating in her art exhibition and reading her albums. Meanwhile, the writer of this paper tried every means to know about the connotation and extension of Hui’s cases objectively and comprehensively. She hopes that it could play an enlightening role in not only enriching the theoretical studies of contemporary C hinese meticulous flowers-and-birds paintings and discovering some defects, in restless surroundings, of this kind of painting but also the process of creating works.
