Natural therapy has become very popular in America in recent years. Many Americans have a great interest in natural therapy. Chinese medical therapy falls in the category of natural therapy which most Americans lack knowledge of. What’s more, the Chinese class of cultural education in and out of main land China does not mention anything about Chinese medicine. By researching the study of the general Chinese education in America, it is revealed that interest development based on Chinese medicine in the language education is a rarely studied case in China and America. Considering the fact that the Americans have genuine interests in natural therapy, if the interests can be utilized to develop a Chinese cultural class, it not only can expand the content of Chinese education in America, but also can increase the total interest level of learning Chinese itself. To verify this presumption, a survey is conducted in America. The survey is divided into four parts:the acceptance of natural approaches to medicine in the United States, the popularity of alternative medicine in the United States, the popularity of learning Mandarin Chinese, and the interest of learning something about traditional Chinese medicine in a Mandarin Chinese class. The study methods adopted in this paper are document-data method, investigation, interview, mathematical statistics and information analysis. Mandarin Chinese teachers in local schools in America are interviewed. Some are sent by the Chinese government, some are local American teachers. The result of the survey verifies the presumption that Americans are interested in natural therapy, but have a limited knowledge of Chinese medicine. The interest development based on Chinese medicine mentioned in Mandarin class can advance Mandarin education in the United States. In addition, this paper studies the plausibility of the interest development based on Chinese medicine. The already published studies on general Mandarin Chinese education in America offer a theoretical basis. Chinese medical education in China with courses on Chinese medicine can be used as examples. This paper studies the positive effects on the learners’interest level and the spreading of Mandarin internationally if Chinese medicine is added as part of the general Mandarin class in America. Through interviewing Mandarin teachers in America, it is known that teachers meet the basic requirements of teaching a Chinese medicine culture class. This paper analyzes the factors that affect adding Chinese medicine as part of general Mandarin classes in America. First, there is no consented realization and requirement on the interest development of Chinese medicine in a Mandarin class. Second, the translation of herbal medicine and Chinese medical terms are hard to explain. Third, American people don’t have a unified recognition of the value of Chinese medical therapy. Lastly, proper teaching modes of such a class are lacking exploration. In the end, this paper explores some measures in adding Chinese medicine as a part of general Mandarin classes in America. The guiding principles, class mode, and specific measures are discussed. It offers some plausible suggestions. It offers a reference in the content of Mandarin Chinese education in America.
