Patrick Modiano is a Famous French contemporary writer and the representative writer of the French New fable. In 1966, he wrote his first novel. He wrote great works and owned most of the awards in the French literature. Then, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2014. The Royal Swedish Academy awarded his prize: "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation". His works always revolve around the theme of "recall and search", writing the history of a generation of trauma, with a strong self fictional nature. His works are always filled with a mysterious atmosphere, which is known as the "atmosphere of the novel". General Speaking, Modiano’s narrative is concise, fluent, beautiful, and very unique. After Reading Patrick Modiano’s all novels, we can find a "phosphorescence phenomenon" throughout his novels. This "phosphorescence phenomenon" derives from the author’s interview. Namely, his novels’mysterious style seems like the phosphor in the night. Specifically speaking, in Patrick Modiano’s works, the night, the fog, the dream, the illusion imagery, surreal atmosphere, fuzzy characters, the plot, chaos background of the time, the disorder of time, the fragmented space, and the fate of the writing about the works of the heroes are always in tireless pursuit with tragic ending. All form a mysterious and dim writing style, while Patrick Modiano tries to reflect human destinies, life-world of the occupation, and author’s deep thought of his own time. This thesis is based on a close reading of the text, comprehensive biography, and Benjamin’s philosophy and aesthetics, tries to analyze Patrick Modiano’s works’ "phosphorescence phenomenon", and, finally, comes to the conclusion of the creation of the literary significance. This paper consists of introduction, text, and conclusion. The introduction part is mainly of Patrick Modiano’s life, his creative work, the research at home and abroad, and the concept of "phosphorescence phenomenon" Finally, the significance of the topic of this paper was presented. The text is divided into three chapters, respectively on "phosphorescence phenomenon", concrete manifestation, cause of formation, and the implicit meaning. The second chapter of the paper research is the embodiment of "phosphorescence phenomenon" from the Modiano of phosphor elements, phosphor plot setting, and phosphor time and space construction. Phosphor element refers to the night, fog, dreams, and hallucinations which has the flavor of the phosphor of the images in the works repeatedly mentioned natural to work to add a mysterious temperament. Phosphor plot, including fuzzy "beach man" image, mysterious uneasy atmosphere, and the absurd details. "Beach man" in Modiano’s works has been the emergence of the protagonists of the blurred, free variable, which brings the works to a disturbing atmosphere and diffuses the whole works in mysterious uneasy atmosphere of all human things; the lines are endowed with a mysterious uneasy atmosphere. Finally, Modiano in the novels is always for those who are not very much related to the topic, resulting in one kind of nihility and absurd sense, which gives his works a surreal means. Phosphor and spatiotemporal refers to Modiano under the time and space with phosphor breath. Time is a very jumpy subjective, no clear boundaries of the past, present, and future with manifestations of the disorder. Space is divided into the fragment and symbolic. So, the fuzzy of time and space, the accurate and the internal structure formation are an internal tension and uncertainty; phosphor space-time is works in the two lines of longitude and latitude, letting the works in the construction of the structure with phosphor breath. The body of the third chapter discusses the phosphor phenomenon causes, including the self fiction writing, worries about the identity crisis, and the new French fable faction influence. Modiano claims that his work belongs to combination of autobiography and imagined; and his novels are formed by mysterious uneasy "phosphorescence phenomenon", and his own fiction writing inseparable. The gloomy childhood experience, although not personally experienced the World War Ⅱ, has been a war cross on behalf of the damage in writing; the author’s uneasy is rooted "phosphorescence phenomenon", the formation of ideas. Also, Modiano as a Jew, but during the period of childhood accepted the baptism of the bishop let him in the future Catholic and Jewish world, which cannot be accepted; identity has become an insurmountable obstacles; and he has a Jewish father, who was unidentified during World War II, and brought him on the identity of the obstacles. Therefore, panic, brought about by the identity consciousness of fuzzy and identity diffusion, let him always rooted in the world of the novel, this sense of unease and tireless pursuit of the ambivalent and contributed to the formation of "phosphorescence phenomenon". The New French fable faction influenced "phosphorescence phenomenon". New French fable faction appeared in France in the 20th century in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is of no unified organization and declaration of the factions, but they are like the use of allegory to writing. Influenced by the literary style, Modiano’s works are full of irony and metaphor, described as "Hypocratic face", sadly expressed in an era of darkness and depravity, desire in the history of seeking redemption.Body of the fourth chapter is about the significance of "phosphorescence phenomenon". Implication of "phosphorescence phenomenon" includes two aspects, first of all from the connotation; "phosphorescence phenomenon" always flowing the restless mood and atmosphere is the authors holding German occupation period, the tragic fate of the embodiment; but the author is not straightforward, but with a recall of such a form to recreate those who gradually forgotten by the trauma to the world, in order to arouse current people to think about how to fix the pain, and not to let the tragedy recurrence, so as to find the real spiritual Utopia. Secondly, from the creation and aesthetics, the author in the reconstruction of the historical, but like the history of strange of hazy, in the formation of such a blurred mysterious uneasy "phosphorescence phenomenon" which is the historical success into a kind of poetic writing, then, in the formation of a mysterious and refined atmosphere let our readers feel to bring advocated by the Walter Benjamin’s "aura" aesthetics of art drunk and shock.Patrick Modiano’s works at home and abroad research have been very mature, but nobody talks about what he mentioned about the "phosphorescence phenomenon", the key to study the phenomenon. Then, this thesis is trying to seize this phenomenon from the concrete embodiment of the "phosphorescence phenomenon", forming reasons and implications on three aspects, so as to explore the Patrick Modiano’s literary creation style and literary significance, so as to provide an alternative perspective for the research into Patrick Modiano.
