There are immeasurable vast difference between Indian Buddhism and Chinese Civilization, for the process of Buddhism chineselization is an innovation and a spread which is totally different from that of the Chinese philosophers’ thoughts in the early Qin and is a bidirectional communication between Buddhism and Chinese culture. Studying Buddhism Chineselization from the perspective of innovating and spreading, people are able to argue the intercommunity of innovating and spreading theory in historical dimension from the process of Buddhism Chineselization. This essay with six parts, which is based on the innovation diffusion theory of scholar Rogers, expounds the spreading process of Buddhism Chineselization through four main factors, including innovative characteristics, spreading channel, social system and time features. In this process, take the variables in Han Dynasty, Wei-Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang Dynasties periods as the main line, put the innovative features, communication channels and the social system through them.Firstly, this essay makes some conclusion and analysis about the time of Buddhism entering China and the road it passed through. This is an inevitable problem to Buddhism Chineselization.Secondly, the main body of the essay is focused on studying the spreading process of Buddhism Chineselization. When spreading in the ancient society of China, the culture of Buddhism, as a new kind of culture entering China, depended on Taoist power absorbing the wisdom of Yellow Emperor and Laozi and during the period of Wei, Jing, South and North dynasties, mixed with metaphysics. Buddhism was also constrained by Confucian and Daoist thoughts when it grew and developed. On one hand, it maintained religious features; on the other hand, it catered to Confucian and Daoist thoughts and became more Chinese. At last, various factions and founders emerged in Sui and Tang dynasties. The Zen Buddhism founded at the Mid-Tang Dynasty was the mark of Buddhism Chineselization’s evolution and accomplishment. These complicated process precisely manifests that the history of Buddhism spread in China is a history with collision and combination which achieves the spreading effects of value-added culture in the end. Finally, this essay concludes that when spreading, as a heterogenous culture, Buddhism must have conflicts and confrontation with traditional Chinese culture, but then they gradually fit in and mixed with each other and generated innovation of China.
