| As a technique for making bases in lacquer art, linen-based dry lacquering technique emerged in the Warring States Period firstly and is still in application today. Linen-based dry lacquering technique for production of lacquerware has been widely applied during various dynasties in China’s history. This technique has been fully used in practice and presented its advantages, for which it could be preserved and maintained in the long history. With progress and development of times, materials, tools and techniques used in traditional lacquer art of China became important carriers for recording China’s history and culture. Although lacquer art no longer plays an important role in people’s life today, advanced and excellent techniques and concepts contained in lacquering techniques are worth being inherited and carried forward.This paper focuses on sorting and analysis of the history of linen-based dry lacquering technique and making a vertical comparison of changes in the technique in different periods, based on which important position of the technique in China’s arts and crafts and its characteristics are directly presented. Through sorting of historical materials, application and development of linen-based dry lacquering technique in China and other countries are reflected, and historical value, cultural value and artistic value of the technique as well as its influences on other countries are sorted out. Through learning in Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Studio of Master Gan Erke in Huangshan City and Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan, the author of this paper is able to perceive applications of this technique under different regional cultures and the differences among them and thus understand the essence and profound content in this traditional technique. Based on sorting and analysis of a large amount of historical materials and the experiences acquired by the author during creation process, influences of this traditional technique on China and other countries are presented in this paper with the combination of field investigation and interviews. |
