The translation materials are excerpted from Letters to his Son on the Fine Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman by the Earl of Chesterfield, who was a British diplomat, statesman and writer in the 18 th century. This report first introduces the translation process and Peter Newmark’s communicative translation strategy, which is the theory applied to instruct this translation practice. Then case study is used to analyze the three main translation issues, which are flexible and elegant diction, clear and coherent expression and adequate conveyance of the writer’ tone, and to elucidate the effective methods adopted under the guidance of the communicative translation strategy. In the end, the conclusion is drawn that the communicative translation strategy can provide ideal instruction to the translation of the epistolary texts from English into Chinese.
