| Communicative translation,a translation theory was initially published in 1981 by contemporary British translator Peter Newmark in his book Approaches to Translation. The communicative translation aims to accurately convey the original text’s contextual meaning to the target language reader, making both the ideological content and the linguistic form more understandable. From the perspective of the reader, communicative translation reproduces the process and result of the original text in the translation, thus realizing the“organic combination” between the original text and the target text.In recent years, communicative translation theory has gradually received widespread attention in domestic academic circles. However, the study found that the application of the theory of communicative translation to Chinese translation in the financial field is still in its early stages. As a result, this report makes an empirical study of financial texts from the perspective of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory. The corpus text of the study is selected from the report Accelerating Trade Digitalization to Support MSME Financing issued by the WTO in March 2021.The report discusses the Chinese translation of financial texts and expounds on the translation techniques and methods adopted in financial texts from the standpoint of lexical, syntactic, and discourse level, with the goal of serving as a reference for relevant financial texts. There are six chapters in this translation practice report: The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly discusses the background of the research, the significance of the research, and an overview of the source text. The second chapter is the description of the translation process, which mainly summarizes the whole translation process from three aspects: pre-translation work, translation process and post-translation work.Chapter three, the literature review,is categorized into three parts: previous studies on communicative translation theory, previous studies on the translation of financial texts, and comments.Chapter four is a theoretical framework, which mainly outlines the relevant concepts of Newmark’s communicative translation theory and analyses the differences between semantic and communicative translation. The fifth chapter is case analysis.Combined with specific cases,it makes a systematic study of the text from three aspects: lexical, syntactic, and discourse level, and focuses on the translation strategies of financial texts, primarily including lexical conversion, amplification, semantic extension, linear translation, order adjustment, and voice transformation.Chapter six is the conclusion of the translation practice report. It begins with summarizing translation research, then moves on to the limitations of this research, and ultimately,it offers some suggestions for improvement based on the shortcomings of the report. The report shows that communicative translation has important guiding significance for the Chinese translation of financial texts, but the role of semantic translation should not be neglected at the same time.Through translation practice, translation theoretical research, and empirical analysis, this report examines the theoretical significance and practical value of Chinese translation of financial texts. |
