The Images Of Chaste Women In Song Poetry

The images of chaste women in Song poetry mentioned in this paper refer to the images of women who died in defense of their honorable chastity or virginity created in the poems of Song dynasty. The image of chaste women is an important branch of Chinese ancient feminine image. This research can not only rich female’s image research results and study the literary feelings and literary values implied in the image of chaste ladies, but also understand the ethical moral connotation of "chastity" and "spirit" in-depth.This paper insists on the position of macroscopic analysis and the microscopic analysis and it divides into four aspects to make a research about the image of chaste women in Song poetry. The first one is about the cultural background of chaste women’s images. Firstly, through the combing of chaste concept in Song dynasty, from the origin of chastity to the historical development and evolution, it reveals the fact that the chastity concept is further strengthened in Song dynasty. Also from the chastity concern of thinkers, scribes, historians, national government and civil publics, this paper will interpret the reality of the chastity concept in Song dynasty. The second aspect is about the different characteristics of chaste women image by various artistic techniques. The images of chaste women seen in Song poetry are under two themes of “virtual” and “record” to explore the characteristics of the images. This article will study the virtual image of chaste women from "watching", "revolting" and “hiding face” and play close attention to the factual image of chaste ladies from "chastity temple”,” history stories", "honor" and "eulogy " these aspects. The third one is about the emotion concept of literary and characteristics of chaste women image. From the perspective of scholars’ traditional value and concept, it consults the connotation of chaste women in Song poetry and makes illustrations fro m scholars’ emotion value orientation reflected in Song poetry by images like “Amah Rock” and “Qiuhu’s wife”. Fourth, by revealing the ideological content and artistic characteristics of chaste women’s image in Song poetry, this paper will analyze its impact on future generations. The macroscopic analysis this paper made will contribute to the review of chastity ethics. While considering the analysis of chaste women’s image and style in microcosmic study, the detailed and complete discussion will help us have an objective and comprehensive understanding of the meaning of chaste women’s image in Song poetry.
