The planarity language of the art of painting has different ways of expression under the background of different periods, nations and cultures. From Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, the post-impressionism artists in the late 19 th century to the modern artists in the twentieth century, they constantly made attempts and exploration in the pursuit of the planarity painting language, endowing the planarity language of the art of painting with unique charm and spiritual connotation. The varied western art movements in the 20 th century had close connections with planarity. The Dasstatiiches Bauhaus which was founded in 1919 in Weimar of Germany is one of the most high-profile art schools in the process of modern art development. The foundation of Bauhaus was to break up the barrier between artist and craftsman. Artists, craftsmen and handicraftsmen could cooperate with each other in this field so as to further promote the social reform and industrial manufacture. As the first president of Dasstatiiches Bauhaus, Gropius tried to promote education reform and change people’s life style with design. Bauhaus was founded in the early 20 th century where there were various forms of artistic presentation. Although it is a college constructed for the development of modern design education, this vanward art school employed Lyonel Feininger, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Josef Albers and other avant-garde artists, which not only had a far-reaching influence on the modern architecture and design, but also exerted a significant influence on the western modern painting art in the early 20 th century. With the planarity of painting as a principal line, and with Bauhaus’ s thought origin and background as the breakthrough point, this paper elaborates the establishment and development, teaching concept and curriculum of Bauhaus. Furthermore, through summarizing the tendency of planarity which occurs in various modern schools of art, the teaching process, personal theory of art and planar works of modern artists will be narrated based on Bauhaus environment. Besides, planarity tendency of painting language will be analyzed in detail from three aspects including simple form generalization, abstract color, point, line and facet, musical vivid signs and rhythms so as to explore the relation between planarity language of painting and western modern painting art in the early 20 th century and the spiritual connotation of Bauhaus thought and planarity language will be deeply experienced. In the process of research, combined with personal creative practice, understanding and expression of planarity and formal language in painting creation will be further deepened and the reflection and enlightenment on contemporary art and culture brought by 2D planarity will be proposed.
