This thesis mainly discusses the photography of renovated Chinese ancient architecture. To start with, the author briefly describes the trend in the history of architectural photography in the 20 th century. Based on the “industrial archaeology” style of the architectural photography of the Becher School and the photographic research methodology of “typology”, and with reference to the photographic archives compiled by Liang Sicheng on Chinese ancient buildings, which appears to be in a preliminary stage of typology, the author expounds the role of typology in the photographic practices on Chinese ancient architecture. The thesis emphatically reviews the typological research methodology and way of thinking adopted by the Becher School in photography, including a profile of the industrial photography, documenta Kassel, the three generations of Bernd and Hilla Becher, the development and influence of the Dusseldorf class and makes a conclusion thereon. In her photographic practices relating to the renovation projects of Chinese ancient architecture, the author clarifies the applications of the traditional large format with reference to the status quo of protecting and renovating historic sites in Beijing. The thesis explores whether China should follow the principle applied by Germany in the research, compilation, collection and storage of architectural photographic documents. Focusing on the renovation projects of the ancient buildings in Beijing during the Ming and Qing dynasties(from 1368 to 1911), the thesis illustrates an approach to developing photographic archives of renovated Chinese ancient architecture, including photo-taking plans, specific photo-taking summaries, and explicit on-site photographic work descriptions, covering altars, shrines and temples. With this thesis, the author hopes to provide the photography of Chinese ancient architecture with a way of thinking as reference.
