The letters from 201 to 230 of Letters to His Son have been taken as the material for this English-Chinese translation practice. After the analysis of the features of the original text, Jef.Verschueren?s Pragmatic Adaptation theory, which best suits the situation, has been chosen as the guidance for this translation practice. With the help of this theory, the toughest translation difficulties have been solved from the following four angles: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, the dynamics of adaptability, and salience of adaptability. Then specific translation methods such as extension, explanation and recasting are adopted in order to conform the same effect between the translated version and the original. The thesis is an attempt of reporting the practical application of Pragmatic Adaptation theory to guide the translation practice, hoping to provide other translators with some experience and enlightenment in translating similar materials.
