A Practice Report On MFA Website News Translation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a specialized agency for a country to implement foreign policies and direct foreign affairs, the website of which reports the solemn statements of the country’s political position, policies and guidelines and diplomatic principles. As a window of showing China’s diplomatic image, MFA of People’s Republic of China should transmit China’s political attitude to diplomatic events when reporting. For this reason, an effective translation principles and strategies must be found to ensure the success of the news translation on this website. This translation report is based on the author’s practice experience in the project of translating diplomatic news on the website of MFA of PRC. During the translating process, considering the particularity of political texts, the author believed that the Functionalist Skopostheorie has some guiding function and referential meaning for the translation of this kind of texts. In the practice, the author found it difficult to accurately translate the special words and sentence patterns with Chinese characteristics. Under the instruction of Functionalist Skopostheorie, the author made analysis of cases in the practice, trying to solve the difficult problems and discussed the corresponding translation methods and strategies according to the three rules of Skopostheorie, hoping to give some directions to the translators and revisers participating in this project in the future and provide some references for the translation of political texts.
