| This translation report focuses on studying the English-Chinese translation of the fifth chapter of China and the West, a book written by Wolfgang Franke. This book aims at showing its readers what impact the past relationship between China and the West has on the mutual diplomatic ties of both sides nowadays. The fifth chapter mainly talks about trade and confrontation, exchange and integration, invasion and concession between China and the West. Moreover, it has given answers to the following questions, such as:What impact have the “unequal treaties” had on China? How did Western countries build its colonial administration in China? How did Western countries enlarge their interests that they had gained from invading China? How did the Chinese government and Chinese people react towards the invasion of Western countries? How was Christianity introduced and developed in China? etc.Even though it is a painful and humiliating experience for China, the encounter between China and the West helps to stimulate the advancement and progress of contemporary China and it helps Chinese people realize the backwardness of their country and their traditional political institution. This book possesses historical significance for us to reflect on, to memorize and to learn historical lessons from. History tells us a truth: nations which are underdevelopment will be punished.This translation report is divided into five parts: The first part is concerned with the description of the translation task; the second part is concerned with the preparations that the translator has done before translation; the third part is concerned with the translation theory, strategies that I have adopted in my translation. The fourth part is concerned with the case study of types of problem that I have met in translation and how I deal with these problems; and the last part is concerned with the summary of what I have gained from this translation task. |
