Recently, entertainment-oriented rewritings have gradually become a new trend in subtitle translation, especially in sitcoms. It breaks some limitations of traditional subtitle translation to adopt a more flexible style in translation, such as using a large number of well-known network buzzwords, idioms, proverbs, celebrities? names and Chinese poems in translation. This more practical and understandable translation form not only refreshes audiences in its content and style, but also skillfully transmits the culture and humor in sitcoms, gaining support from the majority of audiences.At present, systematic studies need to be conducted on the new trend of translation. Until February 2016, typing the words “entertainment-oriented rewritings” in the advanced search of CNKI, there are only 4 studies exploring this phenomenon of subtitle translation from Rewriting, Defamiliarization and Reception theory respectively. The scope of these studies is relatively limited, only focusing on several hit English movies, instead of English sitcoms which are rich and various in content and styles. In the aspect of theory, Schema theory has gradually developed into a mature theory and achieved great harvest in many aspects such as philosophy, cognitive psychology, foreign language teaching, linguistics and so on. Although Schema theory has been used in translation in recent years, it is rarely applied in subtitle translation. Until February 2016, typing the words “Schema theory” in the advanced search of CNKI, there are 1677 studies related with “English teaching”;157 related with “philosophy”; 653 related with “translation”; 4 related with “subtitle translation”;zero related with “entertainment-oriented rewritings” now.Therefore, this thesis intends to explore entertainment-oriented rewritings of subtitle translation in sitcoms from the perspective of Schema theory. The reason why I choose this theory is that Schema theory focuses on exploring one?s comprehension process of new things. Specifically, Schema theory depicts how people search the schema in the brain, and then how they explain and predict, organize and absorb, modify and organize the new information on the basis of their schema when they face new things. The author holds the opinion that Schema theory has a strong explanatory power to the phenomenon of entertainment-oriented rewritings in sitcoms, because entertainment-oriented rewritings adopt audiences? familiar forms to stimulate their existing schema, so as to establish the relationship between audiences and foreign language and culture. This new translation style also helps audiences to assimilate and absorb new information in a short period of time and have a better understanding of the culture and humor in sitcoms, so that it can achieve the best effect of subtitle translation. Therefore, what principle entertainment-oriented rewritings applied in its translation is just consistent with that in Schema theory. In addition, this thesis chose the American typical sitcom Two Broken Girls as the blueprint and collected some typical examples of subtitle translation to make a comparative analysis of entertainment-oriented writings and traditional subtitle translation, aiming to prove that under the guidance of Schema theory, adopting entertainment-oriented rewritings has a significant practical function on subtitle translation, especially on subtitle translation of sitcoms.
